This year too Terre De La Custodia will be to the forefront at Vinitaly, the annual international wine and spirits fair which has been held in Verona since 1967 and is now at its 51st edition.
Vinitaly covers over 95,000 m², hosts over 4,000 exhibitors and reports around 150,000 visitors a year. The Fair brings together producers, importers, distributors, restauranteurs and trade journalists, experts and opinion leaders.
In addition to the exhibition space for wine producers, the Fair has workshops, a buyers club and special exhibition areas to promote Made in Italy and showcase emerging companies. International competitions and awards are also organized at Vinitaly. The most famous of these include the International Enological Competition, the International Packaging Competition and the Vinitaly International Competition, which together with the International Wine and Spirit Competition promotes the spread of wine culture worldwide.
Of the key events this year we recommend “La nuova frontiera della Viticoltura e dell’Enologia Italiana” (The new frontier of Italian wine growing and enology), organized by Vinitaly in collaboration with Wine Research Team. This event will be held in the Sala Argento – Palaexpo, entrance A2 (1st floor) on Wednesday 12 April, from 11:00 to 13.00, and feature an invitation-only wine tasting.
Speakers: Riccardo Cotarella and Ian D’Agata.
Wine Research Team was set up by Riccardo Cotarella in 2012, when he decided to group together under his guidance some 35 companies across the whole of Italy, including Terre De La Custodia. The companies in the Team follow the recommendations of a scientific committee chaired by Cotarella himself. This innovative and futuristic research project draws mainly on scientific research, with a sharp focus on sustainability.Participants in the event will include producers, restauranteurs, distributors, buyers, wine lovers and journalists from all over the world.
This year, in our medieval stand, we will have the pleasure and honour to offer you four of our best wines in a guided tasting.
Here they are:
1. MONTEFALCO BIANCO DOC PLENTIS 2016
LThe novelty of the year, this has a bold straw yellow colour. Its nose is vinous with intense fruity aromas. In the mouth it’s pleasantly dry with notes of fruit, and has good body. Suitable for substantial appetizers, it’s ideal with white meats and fresh cheeses.
2. MONTEFALCO ROSSO RISERVA DOC RUBIUM 2013
Rubium comes from 20 year-old vineyards and is refined for 14 months in French oak barriques and six months in the bottle. A prestigious and subtle blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot grapes, it is a deep ruby red with purple glints. It has ripe fruit aromas and is velvety and elegant in the mouth. Pairs well with rich first courses, pork and game.
3. MONTEFALCO SAGRANTINO DOCG EXUBERA 2006
Refined for 12 months in barriques and at least six years in the bottle, this wine is garnet red with orange tints; it’s rich in heady aromas like blackberry preserve, prunes and sweet spices, with balsamic notes, black truffle and toasted bread, and smoothly round in the mouth, with a long and persistent end. Pairs perfectly with succulent dishes and fatty or braised meat.
4. MONTEFALCO SAGRANTINO PASSITO DOCG MELANTO 2012
Refined for 12 months in barriques, this wine is an intense ruby red. Its nose features blackberry jam, prunes, cinnamon and biscuits, with a liquorice note in the end. Warm, round and very persistent in the mouth. It ages for long periods, even up to 20 years. It should be served at 20° C after decanting well in advance. Goes magnificently with chocolate- and spice-based desserts but also with pot-roast wild boar and roast lamb.
